The Damp Coming (revised)

The dewdrop, glassy, rests
on the forehead of a marigold,
sweat of the garden
awaiting a far-off rainstorm.
A hummingbird flees.
Beneath grasses and the goldenbell,
ferns and japonica,
the soil postures with desire
for nourishment,
the flowers drowned.
The flagging moon-faced petals
of a lone magnolia
grow limp on their stems
glorying in the tree grounded,
the thunderhead reflected in the dew,
and the damp coming.
